I agree that using women in suggestive ads (like beer) is degrading. Makes people in general keep up the idea that women are sex objects. but these women get paid to do that and want to do those ads. it's the idea that will keep on going if women let it. Advertising is about sex-sex draws attention to the object they are selling. Children in advertising is a whole different subject, besides, there are laws protecting children from subliminal sexually depicting advertising--thank god.

I don't think it's degrading...using a child for the same ad that a half naked woman would be in seems very odd, what does that have to do with anything? I think advertisers are trying to appeal to the people they are selling to...if they are selling kid's clothes that having a child in the ad makes sense, if they are selling women's clothes, then women make more sense. The half naked women they show in car and beer ads are to appeal to grown men...that is why they don't have kids in the ads, that would be more innappropriate than having women in them.

This isn't exactly a question as it is stating an opinion. And so, i'll give you mine - that of a woman.
I disagree. Sex sells, period. And companies capable of doing so will do quite a bit to make a buck.
Why should it be degrading for a woman to have her image associated with a product, wether or not she's dressed beeing a secondary alltogether?
Personally, i have a hatred of camera's. I smash the things as soon as they're aimed at me - i won't even be in the room if my husband has his webcam sitting on his desk.
But i can't say i've never been jealous of some of the ladies you see in, say, the Sloggi ads, or in perfume campaigns. Ever noticed how perfect they're made to look ?

I guess it depends on how people view the human body. If people perceive the human body as disgusting or dirty then it might seem degrading. However the human body should be viewed as beautiful and depending on what kind of advertising it is in it should be considered the canvas for a work of art. Porn excluded from this. A naked body shown in good taste and not looked upon as a sex object... in my opinion is not degrading. What is being sold? That is the question.....It is all in the eyes and mind of the beholder and everyone can answer this in a different way. Those who wish to do things with their body like porn are degrading themselves .... not all of us as a whole or all women and if we do not like that sort of thing we are free to not view it. If a person is in support of porn or beer commercials with half naked women and the women do not feel they are doing something degrading that is all on them. If a person is looking to purchase porn then i guess the best body wins. Tough one indeed.

I agree with the OP. Absolutely true. It's also manipulative toward men. I mean, they're thinking we'll buy potato chips because we like a woman's picture, even if we don't need potato chips. Men are the intended victims of it. There's a funny chapter in "The Dilbert Future" about this, but it covers a lot more of the subject of targeted advertising, where they collect data on you personally and then direct ever-more-irresistable advertising at you.
They aren't trying to make the world a better place when they do that, certainly. Some of the posters in this thread don't seem to understand what the use of women in advertising is for.
I'll go farther than that, and say that women, because of their drastically lower testosterone levels, have absolutely no clue what it's like to be a man, with the advertising that we have to look at. You really have no idea.

It depends on what they are selling. If the ad is an ad for underwear then its no big deal. If they are selling motor oil then there is no use for a 1/2 naked woman.

It's not a matter of politeness. It involves context; sexual objectification has nothing to do with 'politeness'.
You state: "a woman whose half naked in ads attracts consumers" and I can tell you for sure it doesn't attract THIS consumer - and many millions more.

well i'm sure no one would expect a man to put on woman's clothin in order to advertise them. however, i must admit that women are used much more in the advertising business for the sake of catchin men's attention, which i think it's wrong. it makes them look like toys. in some other advertisements (not to be specific) it does make them look like they are materialistic people which is also a wrong perception about them as well. on the issue of being half-naked, surely they do look attractive (no doubt), but then that makes them look like sex-symbols at the same time.

It goes to show that society does not see the woman as more than a sex symbol...What does a naked woman have to do with selling a car, or some food item?
And then, women don't know who they are anymore...they go ahead and believe all that cr*p
You don't see the men standing naked trying to sell a toothbrush....

I think its degrading and I think it is putting wrong thoughts and expectations into peoples minds. If the ad is for something that isnt superficial, such as education its ok. If its for something that has to do with looks it is degrading and says to the person you have to look like this or you should look like this, same with men. Its wrong.
