i've had it for over a year. i don't know why i'm just now trying to figure out what it is. i've read on the internet that sometimes fish are dyed.. do you think my fish was dyed?!
also, what kind of fish get a long peacefully with this kind of fish? i had 2 of these fish, but i went out of town and my roommate forgot to feed the fish, so i want to get a buddy for the survivor.

its about the size of a quarter, and its stayed the exact same color the whole time i've had it.. it's a pretty resilient little fish, i can't believe it's lived this long! i don't think it's a goldfish, and it actually eats tetra food, so i suppose it is a tetra.. thanks for all your answers! :)

From the picture you can see the adipose fin so it is definetly some type of tetra. It appears to be some variation of a black skirt tetra

It looks like a painted tetra ( yes your fish was dyed or actually it was injected with dye) and they are community fish so I would get some more tetras. They like to school so get 6 - 8 so they can hang out together. I think the non dyed species of this fish is called a long fin tetra and they come in black or white I believe. Its been awhile since I have bought this type of tetra so I am going by memory here. GOOD LUCK

Chrissie's right.. it is a painted tetra. The original fish is the black tetra (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi), also called a black-skirt tetra. Years ago, a white variety of the black tetra was developed, and it is this variety that is dyed. The white tetra is artificially colored by Asian aquarium fish suppliers, but the iridescent color of the fish usually fade in a few months. It is a peaceful fish and gets along quite well with other tetra and barb species.

If it was never an abnormal color and has lived that long then it probably isn't dyed. I had a dyed Oscar (didn't know what I was doing at the time)...a "blue berry" Oscar... The color usually fades, my Oscar became a normal albino and lived for several years, longer then what dyed fish normally ever even get to live.

Not sure what kind of fishy you have, but very cute. Have you checked out this site? http://www.fishprofiles.com/ Maybe someone there can help you with an identity. Unless it's an a really odd angle, doesn't look like a goldfish to me...have plenty of them and they aren't shaped like that.

It looks like some kinda tetra
They're schooling fish and should be in a group of at least 6

check out the pics in this article and compare them to yours

Hope that helps
Good luck

Edit*
After looking around a bit more, i think yours is a white skirt tetra, and i also suspect it's a bit bigger then just a quarter

It is a silver tetra. I am posative of it. There are also black tetras to. It is a community fish and will get to be about 1.5" to 2.00" long. They do okay alone or in groups. They do fine with most all community fish.
