Hey there-why do you feel this is not fair? At then end of the day people can still smoke but just not in public areas. I don't see whats unfair about that? I am a non smoker and don't want not to breath in second hand smoke. Smoking related illnesses (minor and major such as cancer) cost the NHS a lot every year, if smoking was banned completely then the problem would be eliminated!

For prisoners, yes, as that is their place of residence (hotels are the same, but many still ban it)

Regarding the Houses of Parliament bar, MP's voted to not smoke there even if they could as it was unfair, so it is a smoke free zone now.

I suggest finding a nice local pub with a landlord who smokes, as often a ''lock in'' is swiftly followed by the ashtrays appearing.

Our locals do that all the time.

Also, as a heavy smoker, I must admit I agree with the ban as I smoke a lot less when out now, and annoying as it may be, it's gotta be better for me, hasn't it?

Though I fail to see the point of not being allowed to light up on a windy platform in an open air train station.

Not fair. Pubs and clubs should be able to apply for smoking licences and they should be issued by area based upon the percentage of the population who smoke, then there will be a freedom of choice as to whether to go into a smoke filled area or not. I went to France at the weekend and although I do not smoke, I found the atmosphere better in the bars with smoking..... probably because there were people in them, which no longer happens in the UK.

I really dislike the majority of non-smokers. They are generally narrow small minded folk who don't go in pubs, but want to see them closed down...for the good of the health of the people who can no longer enjoy them.

Hi, I am a non-smoker but I dont agree with a total ban, I agree we should be allowed to work in a smoke free environment but now i must stand in smoke filled bus stops because they have been hijacked by smokers working in nearby premises, if the government banned every thing that can harm us then would they start to cut of electricity and gas as these can both be killers, what about cars not only do they emit toxic fumes but when they are driven badly they can kill, lets stop this nanny state and start being responsible for our selves, everything that we are told we are not allowed to do the more some people go ouit of their way to do.

Of course it is. Absolutley to the fullest possible amount is it fair. Smoking should be banned entirely. It KILLS people. You can buy somthing from your own f******* supermarket that kills you! WHAT THE HELL IS THAT? It should be made that if someones smoking is upsetting or annoying someone in public, that person has every right to ask them to put it out and that smoker has ever obligation to do so. Smoking is wrong. I saw two great cases of parenting the other day by the way! Two mothers with prams lit up! What the F****?
Im sorry, I just cant stand smoking and its the one things I would eliminate from the world if I could. I dont care about all those jobs lost, look for new ones where you dont kill anyone! We non smokers are in a public place just like that smoker is. Every songle day of my life, me and many other people get up and move because some retard is speading cancer for us all. THEY dont have to move, THEY get to use public benches, stand closer to busstops and get on there quicker just because they are smoking. we non smokers have the right to comfortably use those benches and busstops (and sitting outside at cafes, outdoor plazas, etc) and enjoy our time. Smokijg defgeats taht. the smokers dont have to suffer, do they? its a p[ublic nuisance and hazard, and should be banned,.

ohh, and they chuck their cigarette whevrver they bloody well please

I am a smoker myself. And I actually think this is a fair law because now that I've gone to a bar without any smoker, I don't know how i'll deal with smoke in a small vicinity. Actually, I was just at my friends house a week ago and some were smoking in the room, I wasn't too happy about it. So yay for this law!

I think it is fair. Since the goverment banned them in all public places there are other places not included in the banned places like the one you mention. So what is really fair or unfair on these premise? That it shouldn't be banned in all places?

Smokers have also asserted their rights to smoke that is why it is included in the principle of law whether smoking is bad or nasty it is their lungs not ours so why banned them from smoking their lungs out. Let them smoke for God's sake, but on designated place or spot in any establishment & not everywhere. Is this not fair enough for you?

I think Disrespect is the issue. Or what is called uncaring people. I think you have to do it the way the wind blows like a game of golf, you have to know if you hit the ball or not. If its gonna be good to hit it or if it will be a mistake to smoke. Some just light up and it is really bad if there is a child or -Non-smokers in the area. Id take up reading, chewing gum(i personally dont most times but), smiling knowing 'hey im saving money know i can donate what i would have spend' or save it you know something like that- so, thats my answer. I hope ive helped a little. Well take care, goodbye.

of course not, but then think about it, prison is hardly a public place, and as they cant go far enough away from the building to have a smoking area there isnt an awful they can do about it, tho it would be nice to see the prisoners made to give up (hehe)
and as for houses or parliament bar, the old saying do as i say not as i do springs to mind, hypocritical bast*rds!!

Houses of parliament bar, no, prisons yes- you are allowed to smoke in your own home, so are criminals.

But as has been pointed out the one about the houses of parliament is no longer true.
