since the entire expression is set to 0, we need merely set the individual factors to 0. By this, I mean a + 4 = 0 and 3a - 2 = 0
After this, solve for a in both
for a + 4 = 0
subtract 4 from both sides
a = -4

for 3a - 2 = 0
add 2 to both sides
3a = 2
divide both sides by three
a = 2/3

this gives you two answers, a = 2/3 and a =-4

If you need to solve for a, then take each parentheses as a different equation. You'll have two equations:

Equation 1: (a + 4) = 0 ==> a = -4

Equation 2: (3a - 2) = 0 ==> 3a = 2 ==> a = 2/3

So a = -4 OR 2/3

Hope I helped! :-)

if you're looking for a, just equate both factors to zero.
You'll come up with these values:

a = -4
a = 2/3

if you want to expand it, the answer is:
3a^2 + 10a - 8

foil it out

(a)(3a) + a(-2) + 3(3a) + 4(-2) = 0

3a(squared) -2a +9a -8=0

a= -2 b= 9 c= -8

use quadratic formula...

-b (plus or minus) Square root (b squared - 4ac) divided by 2a

-7 (plus or minus) square root (49 - 96) divided by 6

-7 (plus or minus) square root (47) divided by 6
