My wife rides a Shadow 750 ACE. That was her starter bike, and does well with it. Occasionally I like to take it for a spin myself. A lot of difference between it and my Roadstar.

The Honda Shadow is a very good starter bike. You should also check out the Yamaha V-Star & the Suzuki Boulevard before you buy. Both come in various sizes that may fit you better and are all about the same price. The main thing is to find a bike that you are comfortable on, even if it is a smaller one. You can always upgrade when you get comfortable with riding one. I have a Yamaha V-Star 650 that I absolutely love. All of my buddies that ride the big expensive Harley's get embarrassed when I fly by them on my "little Jap Cruiser" as they call it. So go out and ride. It is a great way to let go of stress.

Up until June of this past summer, Honda Shadows were the only motorcycles I'd ever had... 2 VLXs and 1 ACE. The VLX (600cc) is a great starter and the price is totally right, but you will be left wanting more pretty quick. I'd go with a 750cc. Just don't load the weight up with a bunch of customizations until after you're comfortable with the weight and size.

Honda 750 shadow. I always considered the VLX to be a woman's bike, it is very small.. The only VLX 600's I am familiar with only had 4 speed transmissions the 750 has 5, and much better performance. Expect about 55 mpg on the expressway.

I have a Honda Shadow VLX (600cc), and I think it is a great bike. As one of the others said, it is a lot of bike for not a lot of money. It's great for around town or on the highways. I took mine of a trip from PA to TN and had no problems on the highways keeping up with the two 1000cc+ bikes I was riding with on the trip.

All the Shadows are good motorcycles. I have a Shadow VLX that I bought new in '95. I use it for the kind of riding you describe. It will also run at interstate speeds if you decide to go off on an adventure.
It sits low, handles well and makes good power. Its pretty stylish, too.

A good starter bike from Honda would be a Shadow VLX. They are very durable. And the price is right.

Misterap was right about the Shadow VLX. It's a lotta bike for a little $$. 600cc engine has plenty of power for freeways. Add a small windshield and some bags for weekend trips and I think you'll be very happy with it.
Be sure to take an MSF class if you haven't already done that.
