Lately I have seen raccoons get really close to people because the have been feeding them. Is that bad? Are you taking a big risk in trying to pet one?? Are they as dangerous as they are perceived?

Yes, it is bad to feed wildlife and have them become acclimated to humans. They will now associate humans with food and may end up getting harmed by someone who thinks they are being too aggressive or they may end up hurting someone for trying to get too close. NO, do NOT try to pet one..they are still wild animals and are unpredictable. If you pet one and are bitten, animal control will trap and kill it and test it for rabies. They may round up all the raccoons in the area if they are now approaching people for food and euthanize them all. Tell your neighbors to stop feeding them..this is not helping them..it will eventually sentence them to death. Let wildlife fend for themselves.

The raccoon is a tricky creature. They are only provoked upon encountering other animals that don't act the same way, no matter what the other animals look like. If you rummage in your garbage with them, they should let you pass just fine. You have to be convincing though-- really sink your teeth into those thrown-out coffee filters and dinner leftovers.

The reason racoons are dangerous is because, when southern states racoons were transferred to the northern states to re-populate areas, they carried with them rabies. It's uncommon, but cases of rabies have been reported from racoon bites.
I learnt that when I was looking up rabies in wikipedia.

People percieve raccoons as dangerous?
News to me. They are wild animals though and you run the risk of them biting you if you feed them by hand. That being said, you can have raccoons as pets no problem. They are a pain though as they are very smart and have hands and can rip your house apart much worse than a dog could imagine doing.

i live in town and see them once in awhile come out of the sewers. they are lost, confused, scared and would tear you apart if you tried to get near them. we had one under our porch and he hissed like crazy. my friend had one, tho, raised from a baby and he was very docile. that's the only one i'd ever attempt to touch.
