Another theory I have heard...
It is better to leave it on because the constant heating and cooling cycles will do more damage than leaving it on.
I really don't think it matter much. In all the years I have been messing with computers I have had very few hardware failures.
I just turn mine off when I go to bed and when I know I am going to be leaving the house for more than a few hours.

Well, don't leave it on constantly. Even if you are downloading, after a day or two give it an hour's rest, At least if you only use it a little bit, I'd say shut it down when not in use, leaving it on only as long as you need to. Don't constanly turn it on and off all day...A computer is a little like a flourescent light bulb. I hope this helps.

The answer to this question really depends on what kind of computer user you are. If you are asking for this in terms of how much wear and tear it will have on your computer's parts such as the hard drive and other parts, it is definitely better to turn it off. If you are asking in terms of it will be worth it to turn it off for electricity savings, that would depend on how much you value the convenience of having access to it whenever you want without having to wait for it to start up.
What I would suggest is leaving it on during the day when you use it and turn it off when you go to sleep. Another alternative is to put it on Stand By or Hibernate when you sleep or whenever the computer is not in use. It will save you the start-up time and will revert back to how you left it before you put it in one of those modes.

Mine is always on because Im up and downloading 24/7. The key to saving energy is manually turning your monitor off. If you dont upload and download or need certain programs to run overnight or when your away from your PC, then turn everything off. Your PC does works harder the more you restart, but this really means little as the parts are meant to be abused by friction, heat, ect. Its all really about opinion and saving energy, decide for yourself.

In my opionion, turning it off does nothing, i usually turn mine off i f im not useing it in a while, usually at night, leaving it on could use a fair amount of electricity added to your bill.

I turn mine off when I know I won't be using it for a few hours or more. Once my fan broke and my hard drive overheated. lost a lot of data. So I turn it off to be safe now.

your hard disk will be fine. i turn my computers off every night and i still got a .8 gig hard disk from windows 95 days, that's 800 mb hard disk that can still run today. it just has a whirring noise because i dropped it once. but it can still be detected by bios.

I would say it just depends on how long you'll be away from the computer. Shutting down overnight is a good idea.
