It can be for a girl. A couple of my friends have it as their middle name, and I work with a lady called Frances, Fran for short.

yes I know a girl who has the middle name Frances and all of her friends think it is hilarious...although its mean, we call her Franny...I think it is a funny name, but do not consider naming your child this!

but for a girl it is spelt with an 'e'------>frances
frances is my middle name :D
