Well it definitely isn't PUTTY

As others have stated, it's a blend of materials often. Some are poly based; some are more a gypsum base; IE: MUD.

PUTTY is an entirely different substance and not strictly meant for walls. In fact many PUTTIES never truly dry. You can equate putty to Childs Modeling Clay.

I personaly like sheetrock 20 set it comes in a powder form and you mix it with water it has almost no shrinkage at all and can be put on thick with out cracking onced mixed you only have about 20 min to work with it before it sets

I think you are talking about drywall compound..it is gypsum based..there is no asbestos in joint compounds now days since the early 1980's
