The Moon is in an ELLIPTICAL 28-day orbit ranging from
220,000 to about 252,000 miles from Earth.

On average, the center of the Moon is about 238,700 miles from the center of Earth.

Laser ranging techniques have allowed astronomers to narrow the exact measurement to within less than an inch.

we actually left mirrors on the moon to help with the laser ranging. By that we've learned the moon is moving AWAY from us at a rate of about 1 and a half inches a year

its easy to look up the distance to the Moon.

its not so easy to get a feel for just how far that really is.

i just got back from a LONG (by my standards) trip to see my Mom. took 5hrs.

if I was driving my Civic to the Moon at 70mph, it would have taken 140 days.

as my car only drives about 500 miles on a tank of gas, I would have to refill several hundred times. Thanks to Newton, I really wouldn't have to do that, though, as his 3rd law says, "Once you get your Civic to 70, it stays there til you speed up, slow down or get acted upon by the Moon or random UFO" or words to that effect.
