The smoke was coming from the vent area where the light bulb is. I immediately unplugged the microwave and the smoke stopped but I'm wondering if the microwave is a potential hazard and if I should put it outside in case it decides to catch on fire in the middle of my sleep tonight? I live in an apartment and I was thinking of putting it out on the balcony to protect me and my cat. Should I do anything else, call the fire department and have them take it?

NO! do not call the fire department. do not dial 911. call the manufacturer of the microwave and ask them about your problem. and don't use the microwave again until you resolve this issue. if worst comes to worst, buy a new microwave. but whatever you do, do not call the fire department to take your microwave away. if you are that concerned, then put it outside. just don't keep it plugged into anything at all. keep it outside

If you unplugged it, it is most likely safe. Just watch it for an hour or so to be certain s0mething is not smoldering inside it. Then go out tomorrow and buy a new microwave!

Happy shopping!

If the smoke stopped, than you should be fine....take it outside and leave it on the patio overnight. In the morning...toss it in the trash, and go get a new one...you can buy a decent one at Walmart for $49.00

You should throw it out unless u have a warranty on it. If it's unplugged it shouldn't start a fire.
