I was looking at some old census records from Woburn, Massachusetts from the 1890's and I noticed that a few men's job titles were listed as "japineer."
I looked around but can't find anything about it.
Could it have anything to do with harness making?

It's more commonly known as "japanner." It means a person who is skilled at making special lacquers and similiar artisan crafts such as they have in Japan.
