They were so much better. The thing is, I love having realistic graphics. I wish very often that the old games would be remade with today's graphics, but I guess they won't be. I think because the graphics were not as focused on back then, they could focus more on the story or features.

Take Ultima for example. Probably the best RPG game, especially Ultima 7. The user-object interaction is the most versatile (even compared to today's games), but it is an MS-DOS game, so the graphics are not as great. Come the recent Ultimas, like Ultima 9, the graphics have improved a lot, but the user-object interaction faded to mimic all the other games such as World of Warcraft or Guild Wars.

better? graphics are stunning these days, so in that category no no no. . .

But! there was something so captivating about being Link and going to look for that sword and seeing the difference when you shot those little hoppy things or noticing that the other slime creatures didn't duplicate anymore but got eradicated and you knew you had one bad *** sword and could take on the boss of a dungeon with some ferocity instead of dodging fire balls like a punk.... yeah, it has a lot to do with childhood, when the imagination aids in making things so much more exciting, interesting, and personal. You get older and you start looking for tricks to lure you in, but even the realistic sound effects and movie quality environments are leaving you feeling blah. It's cause you're not a believer in magic anymore... tch tch. jk

Also has to do with the fact that old 8-bit, 16-bit games was more about the action and less about the story and since most children have a short attention span for "story" in games, the older, action-packed games just seemed more interesting. Plus current-gen franchises that most of us grew up with are far too complicated in terms of control and story for children these days and the rest are just too lame for the more jaded gamers. I could be wrong though. willmin's explaination was quite good too might I add.

i personaly can say i don't like the graphics of the older games, i like the games today, and enjoy playing them. its seem much more realistic today than it was even 5 years ago. and plus older games don't really have a story line it just jumps you in the game.
