i did a great research paper on winemaking once, it was very interesting! I learned why they bottle different types of wines in different shaped bottles, about wine chemistry, the development of grapes, etc...plus, the research is really fun!

Without knowing a few more things, it's hard to answer. How long is the paper supposed to be? What course is it for? Are you restricted in any way as to the area of your topic? And (very important) what are you interested in? I suggest asking your professor for suggestions, since he (or she) knows what he wants.

If he rejected the topics you suggested, the reason may have been that he considered them too broad to be adequately covered in a paper of the assigned length. Students writing research papers, especially for the first time, often bite off too much because they're afraid of not finding enough information, but that's seldom a problem. It's much better to pick a topic narrow enough that you can cover it in real depth.
