Children and Youth Services should be able to give you a name not only a needy family, but a deserving family as well.

Yes, see your clergyman, if you have a church. If not, call the nearest one, you might be able to help someone right in your own neighborhood.
Next, call the Salvation Army, love their new commercial, have you seen it? It is a bell ringer at the scene of those in need: a fire, a drunk, the homeless. They should be able to advise you what to do.
Next, call the local veterens organization, like the VFW [Veterens of Foreign Wars], or the American Legion. You could help a Vet down on his or her luck, and some posts do their share to help anyone in need. My Dad delivered food baskets for years, helped with a Christmas dinner where families in need could get a toy for the kids, and a hot meal. at Christmas.
The USO is a worthy charity. They accept donations of food, and money. Ours is at our airport, Lambert field in St. Louis. A volunteer once told me the favorite things the service men and women like to eat are Tollhouse cookies, and chicken noodle soup. She advised us to wrap the cookies two at a time individually. Check it out before you go and do.
Even places of work get into the act. My old place had a big tree by the cafeteria, and what was needed on a paper ornament, like gloves for a woman. This one puts the whole work force in buses, and ships us to Walmart with a list. Another bought care items for a local nursing home.

Talk to your minister at your church. There might be a family right there that is struggling. Contact your local food bank and ask them also if they do anything for specific families. I used to go to the mall and get a gift for a boy or a girl and place it under their giving tree. You write on the tag what sex it is for and the age range. I would switch off yearly. We can't afford to do so this year because hubby has been laid off since June, but I still went to my local $ store and got a few things for the baskets that my whole family puts together for our local Children's hospital so the kids stuck in there for the holidays get a little something.

Go to a local church or synagogue.
You can donate anonymously.
The clergymen will know of a needy family in their congregation.
Some family did this for us when my parents divorced.
I'm 32 now and remember their kindness each Christmas.

Talk to your local clergyman from your community church, recreation centre, mosque , synagogue. They are aware of the needy families. More importantly look closer , like your neighbours, that need help. May God bless you in your efforts.
