I have one week there, and will be on a small to mid-range budget. I plan on hiring a car for a couple of days. All suggestions welcome, thanks!

Whatever you do must involve air conditioning or swimming. It will be the Wet, and very hot and humid. You break into a sweat just blinking. January is not a good time for Darwin.

You can drive south to Berry Springs and Hanmer Springs for a swim, or drive a bit further to Litchfield Park. You can drive out to Kakadu, but a lot of the side roads into places like Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls will be underwater and closed. I am not sure if dinner cruises on the harbour are operating, but that would be a good, sedentary activity.

Darwin In January

There is plenty to see and do in Darwin but it is in the middle of the wet season so it will rain. We might even get a tropical cyclone. Swimming in the sea is out but there are plenty of pools in Darwin and places to swim nearby. The big problem is that the roads could be closed if there has been a lot of rain and some rivers and waterholes are sometimes closed for the same reason.

You'll have a good time up here but don't expect to see everything you would in the dry season.

You may want to check out the Darwin/NT tourist site it has just about everything you may want to know- tours/ car hire/ accomodation/upcoming events and so on.

Most Aust states have thier own tourist based web site with links to all the kinds of things tourists want to know. Always allow some extra time outside of yur planned itenary as because as with any trip, once you get there the locals usually will able to direct you to some worthwhile places that are not on the advertised tourist sites.
