I don't think it's that rude a question... it comes up pretty often, in my experience, in the "what if" game. If you asked in front of their husbands and children, then yeah, THAT would be rude.

Right now I'd choose my spouse, but I doubt my opinion is worth much. I have a committed boyfriend, but I'm still single and childless. My opinion could easily change. Of course, I'd rather die than either of them, but that's not an option here.

It really depends on the situation. I mean if my spouse is an arrogant azzhole that is always beating me or calling me names or something and he were to die in a car accident but my child were to survive, I would pray that he finds peace, but thank God that my child is still alive for I can raise him or her with better values. Now if my husband was a sweet guy, and was really great, but my child was too sick or premature and very weak and there was just nothing they could do to help him or her survive, I wouldn't put myself or my spouse through the heartache of keeping a child or a small infant on machines for the rest of their life, just because neither of us could handle losing them. In a case like that have to do what is best for the child and both yourself and your partner.

So bottomline here is that, people aren't expendable but, when push comes to shove and there is just such a hard choice to make, you have to weigh your options and go with what is best for yourself and all that is concerned.

What a horrible thought!!! Neither. I could never chose one or the other. Either way I'd feel like the sun fell out of the sky and be horribly depressed.
