St augustine attempted to define sin and seperate the various levels of sin and sinning,..mortal and venial sins, differnt sins required differnt attonements ,and penances and to clearify the differnce betweens sins that were just naughty and those that could condemn your mortal soul.He didnt invent sin,adam and eve took care of that,at least for christians.

According to this, it did appear to be Augustine. I suppose he got the right by its being accepted by other people.
