Because its convenient.
I used to believe in some huge conspiracy during the Kennedy assassination, till I really started thinking about it.
Lets just suppose it is some huge cover up.
How much money do you think someone could get if they could expose it? 10 million dollars in book deals, film rights, lecture circuit? Maybe. In any case, it would be extremely lucrative.
The nay sayers then say, "but maybe they have so much fear that they can't." Which still doesn't answer the last paragraph. When there is a will, there is a way and if one person can bring all of that down and make a huge amount of money, believe me they will, even if they take a chance that it could end their life.
Conspiracies thus need to be limited in scope.
However, that does not mean that something can't appear to be a conspiracy. Like the ramp up to the Iraq war. All of that was put together by like minded people who truly believed in their cause, ignoring evidence that did not make their case. That was not a conspiracy, it was just plain dumb.
Peace
Jim

I think that a lot of people believe in conspiracies because some people have very big imaginations and are bored. They think that the "government" is very secretive and hides things from the general public. Nothing could be further from the truth. Most bureaucrats couldn't keep anything a secret, especially if there is personal fame or monetary gain involved.

i believe in most of them. I think truth that is repressed ends up in this group. Sometimes it is not quite as extreme as they say but in between the media propaganda and the conspiracy theories lies the truth.
If you believe the media only, then you are not seeing reality.
also notice that conspiracy theorists are nearly always cultural outcasts. It is like how we can see others flaws because we are on the outside looking in. (and laughing)

cause they have minds that work? and they have the ability to deduce, which is sign of intelligence without having everything told to them or dumped in their lap?
Why do people believe someone is up to no good? when they have only acted suspiciously in a couple of instances? Should we say to ourselves that guy is up to no good, let us dig into it a bit further or wait til the guy does devastating and irreversible damage and then conclude that he is up to no good? Ever heard of things like where there is smoke there is fire? If someone is always being accused by all your neighbors who deal with him of being a cheater and a crook, are you going to wait till he rips you off to come to same conclusion, or believe in the "conspiracy theories". Sure some people take it really off the deep end, but you can't make a blanket assumption or statement that all people who feel that a conspiracy is at hand are loons.
Let us talk about this conspiracy. Do you believe there is a conspiracy to bring as much cheap labor into this country as possible by illegal immigration, HB1 visas, and to send as many good american jobs as possible to China or India? I do...don't you? Do you believe there is a conspiracy to keep america using oil as long as possible, and to delay any talk of serious new technologies for non fossil fuel powered cars? I do...don;t you? and thats just the tip of the iceberg. Here is one last one. Do you believe there is a conspiracy to make americans pay as much as possible for pharmaceuticals and to minimize competition? I do...don;t you?
I don't believe our own government attacked our buildings on 9/11...do you? But I do believe our government messed up and was careless and ignored warnings and then tried to stifle the investigation into 9/11 and say as little as possible about what they knew..to cover their behinds. don't you?

Someone has to make up the portion of the population below average intelligence. Conspiracy nuts fit the bill.
Seriously though...I heard on explanation from a psychologist that makes a bit of sense. He was explaining the Kennedy assassination. On one hand you have the most popular president in a long time. On the other, the killer was a low achieving individual of no consequence. The fact that he took the life of the president seems unbalanced. Thus many people feel more comfortable thinking it had to be something/someone more powerful to balance out the damage done.
Now that I write it down...I'll stand by my first statement and add mental illness to the profile.

If people who put people down for taking the time to research into the real facts, won't see the truth, they are the real kool-aid drinkers. The people who blindly follow and believe the government are the ones who need help! The government relies on people to put others down without questioning them. Open your eyes, and ears, and your might see the truth!

Conspiracies are not like believing in an omnipotent being that would wipe out its creation because it is frustrated by their behavior.
The existence of conspiracies does not depend on our belief. They depend on the ignorant and naive to remain that way.
