and I kept oil in it because I know I had a leak, but not a bad leak it seemed.

SO I get in it tonight and its making a loud noise, and sputtering, almost like a helicopter but not real loud. Riding really rough. It had a tune up last year and the only trouble I was having lately was the oil leak.

Could I have thrown a rod? and if so how much do they cost to fix?

I wanted this piece of sh*t to make it until income tax time. I paid 2500 for it 5 years ago, and got my monies worth. I would rather fix it then buy another. But may not be worth it.

You need to have it checked out by a mechanic. From the description you give, it sounds like you either have a fouled spark plug, a bad ignition wire, or a burnt valve. A used engine for a Geo can be had for as little as $200 and as much as $500, and a new/rebuilt motor will cost around $750. Look on Craigslist for a used motor and find a friend that will drop it in on a weekend, if you need one, and sooner or later you will by the "sound" of it. Sorry for the bad word pun. LOL

It sounds love it is valvetrain appropriate. once you rev the engine, the oil tension is going up and the noise subsides. At idle the stress is decrease and the noise returns. possibly you may desire to run a somewhat larger viscosity oil; different than which you may might desire to replace some valvetrain factors.
