I live in a rented home. Tonight I was sitting at the computer when I heard the only toilet in the home make a sound. I flushed it and discovered it was clogged, so I used the plunger. While using the plunger, the sink in the bathroom started to make a gurgling sound and I smelled a foul smell. What could be going on? What can I do to correct this? Should I call my landlord, hire a plumber? Also, is it okay to still use the toilet and sink? Thanks!

The plunging worked... but, just worried about all the gurgling sounds. Not normal for our plumbing. Probably going to not use the plumbing and call the landlord in the morning.

your drains and drain vents are tied together. depending on where the stoppage was when you plunged you could hear air moving back through the drain line to the sink that was the gurgling sound. that air moving back through the sink is where the odor came from. definitely contact your landlord as you could have a problem with the vent stack or drain lines or both. sewer gas in the home is hazardous as well as smelling bad. the landlord must get it fixed immediately it is considered unsafe and unsanitary conditions.

Have the landlord call a plumber to roto rooter the outdoor clean outs. Might have tree roots, or cracked lateral lines that have muck in them, this is just routine maintenance.

If plunging don't work you need to call you landlord, the waste line is plugged. first snake the toilet, if that don't work you will have to snake the clean out.
