You're best bet, if you're certain that it isn't some kind of canine, is probably a fisher. They are in the same family as skunks, badgers, and wolverines; but, unlike badgers and wolverines, they live in the northeast.
Normally, they are pretty dark in color, but lighter individuals are not uncommon. They are excellent climbers and, as with other members of the weasel family, they are quite aggressive. A fisher normally eats squirrels and birds, but a cat would certainly not prove to be much of a challenge for them.
Anyways, that's my best guess for you. All this is assuming that you would recognize something like a raccoon if that's what the animal was.
EDIT- I really doubt it was the opossum. You made a note of the huge legs, which are definitely not a characteristic of opossums. Opossums generally don't get to anywhere near the size of a spanial either.... a really big male might get to 12 pounds or so.
A raccoon is closer in size to what you're looking for, but they're pretty easy to recognize and generally dark in their overall color....

By your descriptions it sounds find it irresistible would be a small polar endure cub like those from the coke advertisements. My wager is generally right due to the fact i focus on animal dying and appear at post-mortem. Great query and I have a query for you Did you're taking a snapshot of the animal? I consider it would were your neighbor. I recall my neighbor gave the look of an animal and killed my cat. Just ask your neighbor if he acts suspicious then he's the one that killed your cat. WARNING: Never depart your cat external and placed a homing gadget at the cat. Question: Cat lover or Dog Lover?

It was most likely a fisher -- a HUGE weasel. They have made a big comeback in Connecticut.
This sounds like a good reason to start keeping your cats INDOORS.

I was in a campground in Connecticut during the winter and we were invaded by hugh raccoons. They definitely were black and white. http://songstar.org/critters/raccoon01.html They weren't vicious though and merely scrounging for food.

I would guess the possum. They get much uglier as they age and when they bare their teeth they are really frightening. I would guess they reach the size of a spaniel.

Sounds like a badger. Google "badger" and see if that's it. Sorry about your last kitty; it's always hard to lose a pet. Might think about keeping your new kitty inside.
