My mouse keeps scratching his back lately. There is a bold spot on his back now the size of a dime and there are red scratch marks, and he can't stop scratching. Can I use some over the counter cream on the mouse? I don't think I can put a collar on it like they do with some dogs - it would rip it right off.

First, why is it scratching? Did it have an injury or an infection?
Try to figure this out. It's not normal for a mouse to scratch itself bald.
Now, whatever the problem is, I recommend you give the mouse some cod liver oil. You can get it at the drug store in liquid capsules or as oil. Mice love it. And it does wonders for almost any skin problem.
If you think it could have a fungal infection, use an athlete's foot remedy on the skin.
If the mouse had a scrape or cut on its back and it got infected, you could use an antibiotic ointment. But I've never had this happen with a rodent; their minor injuries heal without any problem.

Give him a cookie but watch out what happens after that...
sorry. :*)
Have you tried bathing him? If you use a creme meant for humans and he scratches it, he can lick it off of his foot which may be harmful to his little system.
Maybe he's bored. Try some other type of stimulation like toys or something to distract him.
