My four-year-old son thought that he'd be funny and hang on the door knob of his bedroom door. In doing this, he has stripped all the hinge holes. What is the best way to repair these holes so that I can still be able to screw the hinges back in and utilize the same door? I don't want to have to replace the door. If it matters, it's a solid door; not one of the hollow ones.

There are tools made for exactly that. They comes as a kit with a hand held reamer (and a power drill reamer) that you use to enlarge each screw hole into a a pointy conical hole. The kit also includes a bunch of hardwood pointed cones made to fit tightly in that hole. Enlarge the holes and glue in the cones. Now you have all holes filled with solid hardwood. When the glue is dry hold the door hinges in place and use a drill bit to make new screw holes in the place where the old screws were. Reinsert the screws and you are fixed and ready for the next disaster.

The easiest and fastest way to refasten the hinges to a solid core door is to use a longer screw,I would suggest at least 1/2 inch longer. You might also put a couple drops of wood glue on each screw before reinstalling.Good luck.

There are several ways to fix the problem.

The quickest & easy way is get longer screws, 2-3 inches long to reattach the hinges the longer screws will go thru the door frame and bite into the trimmer, a framing member that gives additional support for the door frame.

Fill the holes with some type of putty filler and wait til it sets. Re drill the holes and replace the hinge but in a different position form the original holes. Contact your local hardware store as to exactly what type of filler you should use and how to do the job.

A good method to use is to fill the holes with wood glue and wooden matchsticks or some other similar material. After it dries , cut off the excess and re-install the hinge and screws that were there.

Easy enough?

Use wooden golf tees. Sand the paint or varnish off the shank of the tees, coat them with wood glue and drive the tees into the original holes. When the glue has set, cut off the tees and redrill the holes in the original locations and rehang the door.

since it is a sollid door, and the screws that they normally use are about 1 " long, then you can replace them whith longer screws. What works good would be 1 1/2" or 2" sheetrock screws, even longer if you have to.
