I am 20 and she will be 40 once bub is born. Its her first grandchild and she is a very young looking and acting 40 year old (more like 35)

She doesnt want to be called 'grandma'

My grandmother has the name 'nana' and her mother is 'granny' so those two are used up..

She said an unconventional name people have these days, such as 'noni'

Anyone have any suggestions? lol

Most of the "unconventional" names are just the words used in other languages, like noni, bubbe, oma, abuela, etc. I think it would be a little silly to use one of these which bore no relation to your own ethnicity, but if what about the name used by those from your background?

I was 19 when I had my first and my Mum was 37 and both she and I couldnt imagine her being called grandma.
Everyone in our family is Nan. My mum, DH's mum and my Nan. Dh's Nan is grandma to our girls as she is old. My girls just add the right first name after Nan and that's it.
So for my mum its Nanny D, his Mum Nanny M and my Nan is just "your Nan" or Nanny's Mum.
Using Noni would in my opinion be silly because its just Nana/grandma in another language.
Find something relevant to you and your family, maybe have your Mum think of her own easy word that a baby will be able to say.

Goodheavens I'd be proud to be called granny or nana be it 30 or 40.
Okay if thats how she feels, why not just get the child to call her by her first name. There is no other name for the child to call. her. its that or nothing.
Nana - Granny - Noni -Gran.

She'll get used to it after the child is born. Your child bearing is really making her aware of her age. Age is a tough subject because it is also associate with our mortality. She doesn't want to think about her death. That's normal. No one does. You'll figure something out. The relationship will still exist without regard to what she is called.

My mom didn't want to be called grandma when my sister got pregnant, (my mom was 37 at the time)... Now 5 years later, she is still known as Yaya. This may give you an idea...

Nonna (Italian for grandmother)
YaYa (Greek for Grandmother)
Vo-Vo (Portugese for grandma)
Gigia (Greek for Grandmother)
Gogo (Go-guh) = Grandmother in Creole (Spoken in Haiti)
E-li-si (Cherokee = grandmother)
Nai Nai (Chinese for grandmother)
Mor-Mor (Swedish for mother's mother)
Mica (Serbian for Grandmother)
Bube (pronounced buh-bee) Yiddish for grandmother
Ajji (Grandma) from S.W. coast of India
Abuela (Spanish for Grandma); nickname=Lita or Litta
Lola (Filipino for grandmother)

I call my grandmother "Ma" because I couldn't say grandma when I was little, and now my whole family has been callin her Ma for 20+years! (Even my grandpa calls her that.)

Good luck!

my best friends mom felt she was to young to be called grandma when her first grandchild was born, and because she couldnt think of anything she wanted to be called she decided to leave it up the baby, who ended up calling her grandparents bopi and popi, which they both love, and now thats what all the grandchildren call them, leave it up to the baby and see what surprising names he/she can come up with!
