Tell me why we shouldn't socialize healthcare.
(The following is a rant. You don't have to continue reading. I apologize now for getting feelings involved lol)
Because here I sit making only .50 above the CHIPs healthcare line.
But my company wanted to take $200 PER PAY CHECK out to pay for healthcare for my entire family.
I have to ask -- from a working class/lower-middle class position -- DO YOU THINK I CAN REALLY AFFORD THAT?!
Sure; the CEO and his partners can. I cannot. I was a secretary; how's that going to benefit me?!
I'm sorry; I'm ranting.
Answer the question! lol

Ok...first having socialized healthcare is not Communist. The guy that said that has no idea what he is talking about. There is a difference between socialist and communist. And guess what, we have a lot of socialist programs in this country that even hard-core conservatives don't want to be taken away. Fire and Police Protection, US Mail, Public Schools and Public Libraries are just a few of the many socialist programs the US has.

That being said, the problem with the Feds taking over the medical care of our nation is that it is hard to trust the government not to make it overally expensive. The American government loves beaucracy. Look at what has happened with the problems at Walter Reed Hospital and the VA hospital system to understand the problems of socialized medicine.

That being said, the government needs to find a way to curtail the growing cost of health care in the nation. Families need healthcare coverage for a healthy populace.

No, like it or not we do not have the personnel nor the facilities to handle the patient load. We don't even have the population to recruit the personnel from. In roughly 5 or 6 years the baby boom retirement is going to really start being felt. Remember, here quickly 20% of the population will not be working or paying taxes. If you go socialized you will dream of the days of just 200 bucks a paycheck. Taxes will have to sky rocket to pay for any socialation.

The for pay medical care actually creates a stop measure on people going to the hospital. If you have a cold you can go get over the counter medicine rather than going to the ER. The need to pay actually takes some of the strain off of facilities and trust me, a lot of them are strained. To make medical care free for all will create a deluge of patients that will clog the system. Remember the woman who bled to death in the ER lobby? That was a general hospital, a socialized facility. Plus if you ever go to a VA hospital you can see what can be expected out of every facility, not something you want.

I know that 200 bucks a paycheck sucks, I pay that myself. But I also realize that it is cheaper than what I would end up paying if socialized medicine went through. You might try shopping for private coverage, you could come away cheaper.

I feel your pain. But the bottom lines are these. Healthcare is a privilege not a right. This is a capitalist based economy. I have several clients (dying of cancer) who are paying in excess of $1000 per month. Do I be a dick and tell them they should have planned better? I look to the greed of people suing the doctors and driving up the cost of insurance, the lawyers, the juries and the judges who have not stemmed the hemmorhagic flow of cash. I also look to our elected officials who've not rewritten the laws governing who can sue and for what as well as the amount of pay out awarded.
The insurance companies are in the business of making money. And, thanx in part to that wonderful restructuring plan of Hillary's back when Bill was pres., -- remember, HMO was supposed to drive down the cost and make it affordable for everyone?, the insurance companies are now making a killing. And, per Hillary's plan of mandatory healthcare insurance, they're going to make even more. There are no easy answers. Go back to school and get a better education so that you can then get a better paying job. Lord knows, I had to.

I have read your question and this same issue has really ticked me off. Some of these answers are unrealistic.
I am NOT a Hillary fan at all.
I do understand about the above the income level. I fall into this category as well. As far as finding insurance less than 200 per week goes, Yes, you can find it. In fact family coverage averages 100 per week. However, if your income is just above the qualifying mark for CHIPS then even 100 per week is probably 25% of your monthly income. Who can afford 25% of their income for health insurance?
Get real people!
As far as waiting for weeks, months, years for medical treatments goes, what difference does it make?
I mean really!
The Fat Cats in DC are already getting their medical covered! The average American is still waiting for weeks, months, and years for medical treatments because of not having the money for the doctor bills. How many doctors have any of you been to did not have a sign beside the reception desk which stated "payment due at time of service"? So more than 50% of the population just simply does not go to a doctor until the condition gets bad enough that they end up in the Emergengy Room with a 5,000 bill to go on their credit report.
At least with a Socialist medical system you eventually would get the treatments paid for, even if it did take a while to get them. Canada, Japan, and several other countries have a Socialist medical system in place already and the citizens do not wait for weeks, months, or years for their medical needs to be met. Why would the supposed richest nation in the world have to wait?
Now, I'd be willing to put money of it that the day you walked into that office to apply for Medicaid and CHIPS you were sitting with at least a dozen immigrant women and at least a half of a dozen young American women with a ton of gold chains draped around their neck who were also applying. I'd also bet that the parking lot had several Lexus, Mercedes, and BMW's in it as well. The people who work hard and deserve a little help can not get it because of these people who take advantage of the system and the government who allows it to happen. Currently an illegal immigrant qualifies for Food Stamps and Medicaid simply because they are migrant farm workers. It is on the expedited part of the application! Expedited is that they automaticially get their application process in 10 days or less versus the usual 45 business days that the rest of the applicants have to wait.
Doubt this fact, go pick up an application and read it for yourselves!
They do not even pay taxes because they work under the table, yet they receive assistance from a government that overlooks those who do work and can not make enough money to do anything but exist!
Even our language is not good enough for them to learn or to use but they can sure take our countries benifits!
Our government even pays spanish speaking social workers more money to accommadate these immigrants than their only English speaking co-workers.
The problem is not just Hillary! It is every single politician who has no clue what more than 50% of the American population is going through just to survive in this country now. Makes you think a little harder during this election season don't it?
In truth, it makes me want to vote "D" none of the above or Richard Pryor!

to bacco l -it's article 1 section 8. I agree we NEED a one payer system for health care. People talk about a cheaper plan like it would be the same plan. Cheaper plans have huge deductibles and co payments. They will tell you a one payer system will cost more because the government will run it. Government runs medicare. Medicare admin. costs are 1.7 cents on the dollar. Private insurers spend 17 cents on the dollar for admin. . Government health care costs one tenth as much per dollar. They tell us how terrible the health care systems are in other countries , but I don't hear anyone from those countries complaining about there health care systems. I'm sorry if I'm ranting but the fact we don't have a fair health care system make me angry !

Pay no never minds to that silly talk. The NHS is first class. They are not using a full syringe, those yanks, they think we are third world. Suffice it to say even when using the private system, all the hard cases are referred back to the NHS and the private hospitals pay the bill. A bit of a magic roundabout for idiots with more money than actual sense.

You are in a tough spot, but to socialize is to devolve what we currently have. Is it perfect no, but can we improve the current structure yes. One model we can employ are specialized medical facilities that only work on one condition and perfect/streamline that approach. Models such as Shouldice hospital in Canada for hernias and the Cardiac and Vision models employed in India.

You are in the same boat as a bunch of people. I don't feel we need socialized health care. We need to take capitalism out of hospital care and pharmaceuticals. That should make insurance affordable.
