If you want to know if Vista will work on your system, why not go to directly to the guys that built them both? Here is a link to the Vista Upgrade Advisor. The Advisor will scan your system and tell if your system is Vista ready, what needs to be upgraded, or if you really shouldn't do it at all.

I really like Vista, the look is great, the security is great... the whole thing has some pretty cool advantages. Better and easier networking capability, better system reporting, just a lot of fun as well. I have been Vista trained by Microsoft and find it quite easy to fix anything that might break (or was intentionally broken for me...lol). The system repair actually works (over XP) and editing the BCD is quite easy as well.
When it first came out, it wasn't so great. Not many of the other software and hardware manufacturers had caught up yet with Vista versions or drivers so that really was a pain. But time has passed and everyone is getting on the wagon pretty fast. It's easy enough to find drivers for devices, and software that will work in Vista. Not everything will work, but then, neither did a bunch of DOS based apps when Windows first came out. Technology changes... oh well.
If you want to keep XP on your system as well as Vista, you could always install as a dual boot. That is a little more tricky, but I did that on my sons XPS because he complained that some of his XP games wouldn't play in Vista.
Bottom line, see if your system will support Vista, then it's your decision what you want to do. It's pretty cool... but if you don't like it, you can always go back to XP if you have your install CD.
Good Luck!

Ask yourself these questions: Do you really need to upgrade?
Can you upgrade?--Higher system requirements (double) for vista...may slow down your computer. Lots of problems with vista compatibility wise right now. I am waiting for another six months. Obviously your choice...vista will get better...but an XP it will never be.

the program is a mess. its incompatible with lots of other hardware, it has constant security intrusions and is also incompatible with many programs and drivers. its a memory hog and quite expensive. in car terms, its the chevy vega or ford edsel of the computer market and is in bad need of a service pack. it will ultimately get to where it needs to be but was literally rushed out of assembly before it was ready. ive been working computers for over six years and make a considerable amount of money converting away from vista. stay away from this program...its absolute...JUNK.

It's important to know exactly how much RAM, the processor speed, the graphics card, and the storage your laptop has before upgrading. Your computer might not even be compatible.
Try doing the test at one of these pages (it's the same one):
http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-3672_7-6671810-1.html
http://ati.amd.com/technology/windowsvista/AreYouVistaReady.html
It does everything automatically, just wait for it to show up. It's easy, no download.
