I think the word mistress connotates an illicit, but temporary love affair. The term girlfriend on the other hand, kind of commands more respect... like a friend that's a girl with potential of being something more. If a married man has a mistress, it's like saying that he's having a no strings attached affair. So I'm sure he'd have more feelings for a girlfriend.

Well when referring to a married man I think it doesn't matter how you "fancy up" the term for his disgrace on the side... they are both the same thing and the only feeling involved there is in his "pants". Especially if he's still with his WIFE... I would guess that means he has more feelings for her.... more valuable, life long feelings anyway... along the lines of love which is completely obvious by the attempts he will make to hide an affair from her, so that she doesn't leave him (or get hurt) of course! Silly "home wreckers" Husbands are for wives!!

Now if this type of married man (that can't keep it in his pants) could learn a little respect and acquaint himself with self sacrifice when it comes to his marriage, wife and kids (if any) the world would be a much better place. In my personal opinion neither a girlfriend, mistress, or whatever one will call her is of no significant importance to a married man at all.

My favorite term used to describe the role of a woman ( i use the term "woman" loosely) involved with a married/ attached man is "Personal Unpaid Hooker" ~ Now how important is someone like that??

I'm guessing you mean what's more important his wife or his girlfriend/mistress since they are pretty much the same thing, the extra lover of a married person? If you mean long range, and the girlfriend/mistress is counting on promises that she smean more or will means more if/when he leaves the wife, remember that a man that cheats on his wife with another woman is a man that will cheat on his next wife with another woman (same true for a wife that cheats). If he has children, he will be connected to the wife through the children for perhaps the rest of their lives. So targeting a married man means a lifetime of perhaps being a background woman, or feeling like one. A girlfriend/mistress may be made to feel very much important when he's lying to the her, but she'll never know (short of video surveillance), if he treats the wife more important when he is with the wife. Cheaters (male and female) are some of the most accomplished actors, they make Oscar winners look like actors in a jr. high play. Relationships are hard enough without them being started off in deceit and lies. If he lies to his wife, then he is most likely lying to girlfriend/mistress. If he has a girlfriend IN ADDITION TO a mistress, god help them all.

You are probably asking this because you man cheated or you are the girl being cheated with. The terms girlfriend and mistress imply certain things. Think about what each mean to you. That is what really matters how we understand the world is how we view it. To me the girlfriend would be the more serious of the two affairs.

I get from your question that this married man has a wife, a girlfriend and a mistress, and that you are either the girlfriend or the mistress and you want to know your status!!!
The answer is no one is more important to that man - not his wife, not his girlfriend and not his mistress.
He is a sleazebag!!!

I would think the mistress, but being he is a married man he should not be with either. The girlfriend or the mistress should want better for herself as well. She should want all of the person not just half...

Well ethics aside I will say that a mistress will generally know about the other woman, a girlfriend usually has no clue. Now for the ethics of it all. I personally recommend staying away from it entirely. A woman needs to have more respect for herself and get her own relationship.

A married man who has a girlfriend or mistress cares most about HIMSELF.

HIMSELF!!! Any time a married man is cheating... the most important person to him is himself and then it's his wife because he's still with her. Girlfriends and mistresses are merely tools! He uses them to get what he wants and goes home to his wife...
