Butterflies often congregate around mud to sip the water, and perhaps the minerals. Some people incorporate mud spots like these into their butterfly gardens to attract more butterflies.

Many butterflies gather at wet spots to sip water. Why they always seem to be just one species, I do not know. When I was setting brick on a summer day, the wet bricks would be covered with butterflies drinking the water. You also see them on the edge of streams and rivers where they can drink in the slow shallow spots.
