I have the spot picked out and the template ready. But I have a question about creating the cut through the panel section of the door.

Please see picture at link: http://img2.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/139c0eabb2.jpg

Should I first fill in the area on the panel section with some putty type material so that when I make the cut and install the pet door it will still be sealed?

I just don't want to have a open gap at the side and top of the pet door.

Any suggestions?

i would fit the pet door as to the template supplied, the door should have overlapping/interlocking join, when u fit the to halves together, looks like a standard door to me.fit the door and patch the gaps after, there is a puty called builders bog, available in most hardwares(aust),its a 2 part puty ,dries so u can tool it in about 5 minutes, sand and paint in 10.or u can just use any other type if u like, take care cause regular putty that thick will crack and most likely fall out ,

Most of those pet doors have a minimum thickness door they will work on. Try pushing the front and back of the pet door together and then measure the gap between the two sides of the frame. It is probably much thicker than the thickness of bi fold doors. They tend to be pretty skinny.

Don't cut the closet door until you are positive the pet door will fit tightly.

The bi fold door is hollow. When you cut the door you are going to have to put a wood frame inside the cut out edge. The door only has about 11/2 inches of wood around the outside edge of the door.
