If you only rely on notes you took for learning about history, you'll miss a lot. Go google "Mormon history" - look up the home page for the State of Utah.

Try this: http://www.rickross.com/reference/mormon/mormon59.html

History has it that a plague of grasshoppers (common in those areas) descended upon the crops around Salt Lake City, Utah. Unless unchecked, they'd eat all the wheat and other food that the Mormon settlers had painstakingly and laboriously raised. However, --and they felt it was a gift from God -- sea gulls appeared, hundreds of miles inland from the Pacific Ocean--and ate the grasshoppers. Crops saved, people's food saved. Miracle.

The link above tells more.

Although Salt Lake City and surroundings were arid and desolate, Mormon settlers were able to farm there, raise crops, pollinate with bees--hence the name Beehive State for Utah --and practice their religion and their culture. Learn more from the state of Utah's history pages on its website.
