I think your teacher is asking for testing of parents for genetic markers, prior to pregnancy. Such testing would indicate whether or not those two people would be likely to produce offspring who manifest a disorder. Example would be testing for Lou Gehrig's disease, genetic heart defects that are hereditary, markers for Tay-Sachs disease, etc.

Well you could do a DNA test on the parents to see if they are carriers for certain markers. This would obviously not be a 100% guarantee that a baby would have a genetic disorder since there is no guarantee which genes a baby will get.
You could also do a DNA test on the baby to check likelihoods for genetic diseases or disorders. This would be the best bet for checking whether the baby has a disorder since the chromosomes are already decided.

By knowing the parents genotype/phenotype a person can use that a cross them in a punnet square to test for the possibility of the disorder reoccurring in their child. All you need to know for this is both parent's family history to determine their phenotype/genotype. You do this to find out if there is any trace at all or if they are a carry.
I had a really long answer but then I made a stupid mistake and it all disappeared. If you think I might be on to something with what I'm trying to explain and you want to know more I'd be glad to help you! But this might not even be what she is talking about. Either way, I hope this helps!

The couple can have their doctors test them for preexsisting conditions that may or may not run in their family prior to ever having a baby.
Once pregnant, there are things like amniocentesis, which can test the amniotic fluid around the baby. There are other tests which can be more or less invasive to mother and fetus, depending on what they're testing for.
You can also consider ultrasound as a test once the fetus begins to develop because this allow the doctor to visually see any abnormalities or normalities in the fetus.
If you have medical insurance, they might have an 800 number for free information to learn more about this.

One can test the fluid around the fetus (i think) to test for certain disorders. There are also tests that they can do on the parents to see if they are carriers of certain disorders like taisacs and then they can tell the likelihood that they will pass it on.
But try googling "genetic testing" and try the link below.

I hope that helped.

From your explanation, it sounds like your teacher might be referring to the tests available to be performed on potential mating couples, in order to determine a family genetic history. The tests would also probably be comparisons of both sets of potential parental DNA against each other, so that dominant/recessive disorders could be seen.

ok, yours is fantastically extraordinary. Creepy extraordinary I once had a instructor provide me a spring scale (to degree weight) and informed me to take it outdoors to degree the temperaure. i idea it changed into extraordinary, yet what the heck - a loose holiday outdoors the lecture room is consistently an outstanding element- so off I went. even as she waved me decrease back into the classification a couple of minutes later she requested me the temperature - and that i discussed "i do not comprehend. this is a weight scale" and he or she were given all mad, and stated something about how this basically proves her factor about how students do not listen or pay interest or something. I nonetheless don't realize what that lesson changed into about.

you can inject a long needle into the uterus (called amniocentesis). and get a small amount of fluid that is genetically identical to the fetus.
