This works..trust me.
Yes, cut straight across, not rounded. But, also..get some cotton from a cotton ball. Take a little bit and push it under the right and left front corners of your toenail..where the nail would tend to grow under. Pack the nail with cotton at the corners until you can't stuff any more in. It will hurt, yes, but it will force the nail to start growing out properly. Replace the cotton... every day..each time you shower, etc. It won't take long before ingrown toenails are a thing of the past. If it starts coming back just pack them again for awhile.
My family has a history of ingrown nails and a dr. told my grandfather to do this rather than have the surgery. He did it and it worked. My father and siblings also had ingrown toenails. This method worked for them. I had them..it worked for me. All our kids had them starting as babies. I did the cotton trick and VOILA, no one has ingrown toenails anymore.
If your nail is infected. soak each night in epsom salts and warm water before putting the cotton in.
(FYI, just cutting straight isn't enough for most people as you have to retrain the nail to grow straight. If you have one you can "pull out" that's fine..but the nail will still grow back turned under. Pack it and train it to grow right. Period. BTW, the doctor my grandfather saw was a foot specialist. He said surgery was a waste of time for folks but most are too lazy to do the cotton trick. Can't imagine going for surgery when cotton packing is so simple....)

cut your toe nail straight across and not too short though. Also, if you want to avoid from having ingrown toenails. make sure you dont wear poorly fitting shoes, especially ones that are tight in the toebox. :)

if it's already infected go to the podiatrist and get a portion of the nail cut out. Trying to dig the toenail out when it is infected is horribly painful and for me has gotten me nowhere. The anestetic shot hurts but after that it is quite nice.
