Yes..the answer lies in a term of grammar known as a dipthong..you can look it up..so you won't fotget it...if you were to go to New Zealand..you would not be able to tell which was which,unless used in context..no offence to any Kiwis..eg. Do you shear sheep?.....

Not in the U.S., no. I could see how in other English-speaking countries they could sound similar because of the accent. Most notably I think Australians would maybe say those similarly.

They don't sound the same when I say them, but I enunciate my words very precisely. Where are you from? Perhaps it is your accent that causes this.

They do sort of sound similar - but if you stress the @$$ part of gas it's different sounding.
