An election allows citizens to vote and have a say in the government.

Because it is the way that the people are heard. A lot of people think that one vote doesn't make a difference, but there are countless cases where it has. At the local level, elections are often decided by a handful of votes. As far as the Presidential election, consider this--if everyone who thought that voting didn't matter actually voted, they could alter the outcome of the election.

elections are not a waste of time because, on the most minimal level, we go to the polls and exercise our freedom to vote (there are many places in this world where people are not given the opportunity or freedom to vote, and there are, believe it or not, actually places where people are more or less *forced* to vote)

If you exercise your right, as a citizen, to vote, you can then be crabby about who won if it is not who you voted for... if you do not vote at all, then you deserve a dictator, or whatever else you get, when the people who do see fit to vote get counted.

If you like the basic way this country works, then, by all means, the idea of voting should become more attractive to you when you realize that all sorts of people from all sorts of places are becoming citizens every year, and new citizens are highly likely to exercise their newly won right to have a say in how our country is run by voting, simply because it is something they worked to get. Not to say anything against these nice people who have worked to become citizens of our country, but... what *your* priorities are might not necessarily be what they are bringing with them.

To bring the argument back into mainstream American society, if you want to see your ideas happen, the only hope you have is to vote (unless, of course, you have a yen to become a lawmaker, yourself). If you do not vote, then, necessarily, our government has little way of knowing what the people like you think. As a result, the government will be more likely to do what the people like me think (ooooh!!!! you don't know what I think!!!! Worse yet, you don't know what my father thinks, and why I vote because I do know what my father thinks... it can get very very scary)

Yes, we can think that our vote does not count, but we can also remember that big stink we had about the Florida votes in the first election that George W. Bush won. Why the big fuss if votes don't count?

I, myself, vote because I am allowed to vote, and because I believe that my vote will be duly recorded, and because I hope that there are enough people who think like me who will also vote, and then the person I have voted for will be the person who will get the job. I have to keep that hope, because I *want* to believe in our system (and I have lived in other places which do not have our system, and I like our system better)

With all the other facets of elections completed, the reasons why elections are not a waste of time should be a cinch.. Ask yourself some simple questions about elections and you will have your answers. Is every student who hits the internet for advice just plain lazy? Apparently so.

Elections give the electoral collage a better grasp at knowing which candidate they should chose. It gives every American citizen a chance to voice their thought. I think that the elections don't help our country at all because if we look at the last election. Al Gore won the popular votes but George W. Bush won the election.

Because we need a leader for our country. If we all try to be in charge of everything, it would be crazy. We have one person that is elected and their political views are the majority of the vote.

It keeps the decision of the people in office, and the people's vote shows an opinion favored to the greater good.....election=interest of the greater good.

Even if people rarely vote- which is often the case, although not in your country of course- there needs to be something in place that allows people to have a voice if they really NEED it- think if the leader decided to do something totally unreasonable or bizarre.

elections aren't a waste of time because it keeps the people aware of the things that are being debated by the government.

Seriously? Why they're not a waste of time? Because we fought to have a say in our government. Because we get the chance to be heard. Because we are voting for candidates who agree with us on things that we feel strongly about -- who are willing to fight for those viewpoints on our behalves.
