I care, but I think lately I err too much on the side of being careful, especially in real life. Online is a bit less this way, but it seems like any more, I can see the crap coming, and it's not a question of *if* I want to get burned, but how and *when* I want to get burned.
Seriously, I can remember so many times when I just *gave* people my money, believed their stories and promises....and then, it was all lies. Or the person making the promises just took a damned powder, or just stopped talking. I can remember feeling *good* about being able to write stories and share ideas and generally just be *open* to other people, back when I thought people knew *how* to be friends, back before other people just *attacked* me over and over. Was some of this my own fault? Sure. Who doesn't make mistakes? But sometimes you get burned on something *way* out of proportion to what you "did wrong".
And now? What was second nature before, is now something that I have to *make* myself do, in a calculated manner. I have to *make* myself care so that my own conscience doesn't die entirely. I have to *make* myself put up with people some days, so that I don't end up shutting them out altogether.
This is much easier to do online than in the real, but I try. I still put in the effort to care once in a while. What's the alternative, becoming someone who doesn't care *about anything* or *anybody*? No thanks.
I hope this helps....and be careful out there, getting burnt for caring is the worst, the scars it leaves are the worst, because it damages your faith in humanity.
