I think that we can't possibly know what the long-term effects or consequences of our genetic manipulation might be. In the past we have many examples of advances that seem to be good at the time but that have negative consequences in the long term. DDT and thalidomide come to mind. So while modern genetics has the potential to do great good, we can't guarantee the outcomes.

With every aspect of science there lies the potential to do great things for humanity such as figuring out how to prevent genetic diseases and defects... however there is a fine line between genetic manipulation and "playing god". I beleive that if they can manipulate genes to prevent things such as sickle cell anemia and just leave it at that, it would be a great thing. But if they start using it to make a so called "super race or species" that could be a little scary.
