what was it about them that made them have such a impact? of course the bands or singer that you enjoyed as a teen or young adult was because they sang to your thoughts and ideas of the world but what makes someone great at music? what made the people you conceder icons icons? was it the sound? was it the lyrics?

I adored and still adore Gwen Stefani/No Doubt, Shirley Manson/Garbage and Billy Corgan/Smashing Pumpkins.
These 3 individuals (and their respective bands) are the epitome of cool in my books. Cool in the sense that they went into musical directions that were different and gave us a chance to love something new. Corgan's the modern poet, Gwen was like the new It girl and there has always been one Manson and her name is Shirley.
Out of these three, I vote for Gwen Stefani for the MUSIC ICON title. I don't think that she has become a sell-out for her foray into commercial pop but instead, it has made her a stronger artiste. The ska roots are still there but changes are good and I see her the second mistress of re-invention - the first being Madonna. :)

Greatest rock band, Creedence Clearwater. He sang "Proud Mary", "Down on the Corner", Bayou Country, Suzie Q, and Who 'll Stop the Rain, eloquently expressing the counterculture's resistance to the Vietnam War and sympathy for those fighting.

Canadian Country Music Artist
Ray Griff
not necessarily well known in the United States...
but he toured in the states in the 1970's
I'm a fan of Willie and Ole Wayon too.
They showed us that country music can raise hell.
And Dr. Hook and Jim Croce.
Everyone I mentioned sings songs with interesting stories and characters.

Just one? When I was a teen I loved the Osmond Brothers. I had the biggest crush on Merrill. When I got older I liked Elvis, and I always loved Hank Williams Sr.

I'm a preteen right now, but my favorite singer as a "kid kid" was Hilary Duff. I still like her current CD Dignity. She is a great actress and singer. When I was about 6-8 yrs. old my fav. singer was Britney Spears. Trust me I don't like her anymore. I liked her because everyone else did and I liked "Oops I Did It Again" a lot.
