The Beatles didn't say it John Lennon said it and he was just a bit of an egotistical creep.

John Lennon said it and it was true. According to the story in the Bible Jesus did not have a very big following when he was alive. The Beatles did. The xtians at the time didn't like it but then again they were looking for anything to help shed a bad light on the guys.

He was saying the Beatles were more popular and had a larger following than Jesus.
Some people like making mountains out of molehills.
Like John Lennon said, He didn't say they were better than Jesus .
It's funny that this question is here because I was just on youtube listening to John Lennon and thought I would check out seniors before going to bed.

DRUG INDUCED JOHN LENNON SAID IT AND IT WAS THAT THEY WERE MORE POPULAR THEN JESUS CHRIST WAS.
THE COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS WAS A WRONG CHOICE AND AN OUTCRY FROM NOT ALL OF THE US BUT MANY.
1960'S WE WERE ALL A LITTLE MORE SPIRITUALISTIC. THE BEATLES WERE A COUNTER REVOLUTION AND MANY WANTED A WAY TO DOWN PLAY THE GROUP ANYWAY SO WHAT BETTER WAY.

believe as usual the question leaves a little bit of error the quote was "more popular than jesus" and given the times and the fans the beatles drew - i would have to say he was 100% correct!!!!

John Lennon was being cheeky. He basically meant that the Beatles were so well known globally that they were more popular than Jesus. It was not meant to be an insult.

I believe they found out that supposedly no one is suppose to admit they could be more popular than the christian icon jesus, especially not when they are popular among christian-obsessed americans. It was the hippie-scare days, when parents thought their children were going to quit school, do drugs, and go crazy because they were listening to "evil" rock music.
Today, we drug kids in school so they don't act out, we kick kids out of school, and we're all a bit crazy, whether we listen to music or not.

Frankly I never heard that quote until after Lennon's death. But I would guess that folk got upset because it sounded blasphemous....when in reality the comment was meant only to relate to their unparalleled popularity at the time.

He said he was more popular then Jesus which might be true which is a sad thing to say. Not alot of people either believe in Jesus or just dont know about Him. He will never, however, be better then Jesus. :)
