Do you think most do this just to see how many people will become their fans in order to see them?

I'm not sure if I should set mine to private. I suppose I should, but it just seems kind of arrogant to me. How odd would it be if people were to add me just to see my crap.

I've also made it a policy to rarely add people. I've never added anyone on here as a friend or fan. I mostly don't want to give the impression that I'll talk to them tomorrow. I'm just that damn sociable.

I think it has to be said. While shutting out stalkers is a noble goal, I really do believe that for some folks, Private Questions, Answers and Contacts amounts to Yahoo's Official Troll and Point Gamer Protection Program.

Simply put....Yahoo Answers is mostly *self regulated* and self moderated. Meaning if some people really, truly, madly act like *utter jerks*, other, otherwise rule-abiding people will be inclined to go after their current profile...and then the next one that has similar syntax, and then the next, and the next...

Trust me when I say this....at least *Half* of the people crying about "trolls and stalkers pick on me" have had their accounts suspended *repeatedly* for openly and flagrantly abusing other people here on Answers. I've seen it. Some people may be innocent victims of real trolls and creeps and stalkers, but some others, more than what you might think, *invited* some of their trouble to their doorstep with trolling behavior of their own.

So yeah, it's gotta be said. Yahoo has a Troll and Point Gamer Protection Racket, and putting Profiles To Private Settings is it. If people were really that concerned about trolls and stalkers, more people would be Blocked, and Yahoo would be getting more complaints and requests from *employers* to not allow certain email addresses (from either their own employees or others) to ever be on Answers again.

Just my beat-up nickel. It's not the popular thing to say, but sometimes the truth hurts, you know? Sorry....

I wish that was the reason I did it. I had to do it to keep the trolls and haters out. I lost my Level 6 account because of them and the unnecessary reporting they do. I pick my contacts carefully and could careless how many fans I have. If you ever get a troll or two on you, you will understand.

Think what you want. Mine are private to keep uptight reporters out. And I don't allow fans either. I answer questions as they appear on the main page and I don't care if the askers are public or private. If someone doesn't want me answering their questions, they can block me. It really doesn't matter to me.

That could be, but if you are on Q&A, why would you want to have it private?

I guess some people just like the privacy, but I like to see questions and answers from my contacts!

Never thought of it that way. But I suppose it could happen.

I have learned to not add contacts until they've reached at least the level 2 or level 3.

Maybe, but there are a few that are not welcomed to see my answers and questions because of harassment, that is why mine are set to private, they could not add me even if they tried. =)

No, you gotta be smart. There are Trolls, stalkers and weirdos who could build a profile on you and make you miserable.

there are a few reasons,

as well as the one you gave people do it to

- protect themselves from people picking on them and reporting all their questions

- so they can make 2 or more accounts and give themselves best answers and stars alot without anyone finding out...
