A variety of inventions would fill in the blank. I can think of two ofthand:
1. sextant
which is a navigational instrument containing a graduated 60-degree arc, used for measuring the altitudes of celestial bodies to determine latitude and longitude.
or perhaps
2. compass
which is an instrument for determining directions, as by means of a freely rotating magnetized needle that indicates magnetic north.

Magnetic compass. Celestial navigation (using stars to chart your course) doesn't work well, for obvious reasons, in fog.

The CHRONOMETER !
without an accurate clock you can not tell where in the world you are in reference to where you started !
That is why Columbus had no idea where he was and guessed WRONG !
