I think Steven has a little bit of an idea, but does not know Amsterdam well.

The museums he names are good, but there are many more and in some cases his spelling is way off:
http://www.amsterdam.info/museums/
Van Gogh museum: http://www3.vangoghmuseum.nl/vgm/index.jsp
Rijksmuseum, still under reconstruction:
http://www.amsterdam.info/museums/rijksmuseum/ (Has a dependance in the Airport, after you go through pasport control.)
Museum Amstelkring, the church which is hidden in an old city house: http://www.museumamstelkring.nl/

The old church, oude kerk: http://www.amsterdam.info/sights/oude_kerk/
The new church, also pretty old now, nieuwe kerk: http://www.amsterdam.info/sights/nieuwe_kerk/

If you like museums, Amsterdam has more museums per square mile/km than any other town, the first link I gave has a pretty good list.
But New years day many of them will be closed.

Shopping on New years day will also be a bit less than normal, but some shops will be open.
This same site also has a good page on shopping: http://www.amsterdam.info/shopping/
The only area in town I would add to the list is the nine streets/ de negen straatjes:

The flower garden Keukenhof will not be open till March, so you will have to do with the hot house flowers in town, the flower market on het Singel will be the best known, here is a link to a map that allows you to search and zoom:

For eating out, Zeedijk, which runs from Nieuwmarkt towards Centraal Station and round Leidse plein have many small places.
Round Leidseplein and Rembrandtsplein, among other places, you can find places for entertainment at night.

I loved it! It has to be one of the best places I've ever been to! I went there for New Year's as well!
You should certainly visit the Van Gogh museum-even if you're not an ast lover! Also, the Rijksmuseum, Anne Frank Huis, which is the attic where Anne Frank and her family hid during World War ll. The zoo is quite good, and so is Madame Tussaud's. There are lots of other smaller and less known museums, that is if you have enough time.
You should also visit a coffee shop and the Red Light District.
Take a boat trip in the canals.
I almost forgot! We had lots of fun ath the Heineken Experience Museum! It's kinda interactive, and they offer you two or three free glasses of beer-make sure you've had a bite beforehand to avoid getting drunk!-and a free gift.
Kalverstraat is a long street where you can buy clothes, shoes and souvenirs at quite good prices. You'll be there during sales time, so make the most of it! However, clothes there seem to be made specially for Dutch people, so if you're medium height, like I am, you will find it hard to try trousers on! LOL
There's also an ice-skating rink at Dam Square.
I'm sure you will find everything you need on your own! You can easily walk the city, and you will be amazed at how safe you'll feel there!
Have fun!

each and every of the Scandinavian international places are motorcycle-friendly. examine out Stockholm, Helsinki and Oslo. Netherlands is in a league of its very own while it comprises cycling, however the Scandinavian international places try no longer difficulty-free to capture up.
