How are adults different? When is there a cut-off in age where there won't be suicidal thoughts?

Basically there are two parts to depression, lack of motivation and hopeless/sad thoughts. If an anti-depressant works first on the motivation, a person is left feeling sad but motivated to do something about it (i.e. suicide). The reason teenagers are more susceptible (which is actually now up for some debate in the medical community) is partially hormonal and partially due to the structure of their brain. The brain is made up of (again basically) the emotional part and the rational part. The brain grows all through the teenage years but it grows first in the emotional part, which explains why teenagers are more emotional and less able to control their emotions. By our mid-twenties our brain has finished developing and we have the ability to put the brakes on our emotions and see things with more perspective, which does tend to help with suicidal thoughts.

Teenagers are different to adults in several ways, one of which is the hormones, and the massive amounts of those hormones raging round inside you!
While in your teens, you will have very strong feelings, which is why some people refer to teenagers as 'over emotional' instead of 'extra hormonal' which is more accurate!
I know it won't make you feel any better, but try and look ahead, day by day! Things will get better, and there will be a day when you will realise that you haven't felt suicidal for ages!
Don't give in to these feelings, as you have your entire life ahead of you, and you will get past it, if you just give it a little time!
As hormones are making you feel so depressed, it will pass, however, if you have some problems that are making you feel this way, then go and talk to your teacher, doctor, a social worker, any of these that you feel comfortable talking to, and all of them will have to treat whatever you say in the strictest confidence, and will be able to help you, or tell you who can help!
I hope this helps!

There isn't a cut-off age.
People think depression runs amongst teens,
actually depression is more common amongst adults.

The thing is that, when you get older and grow up
you begin to realize the good things in life and
quit worrying about little social problems.

When your a teen, you get many suicidal thoughts
because of hormone changes and everything just
feels like it's for nothing.

Just think positive and you will grow out of
these thoughts, for the most part anyways.

Hope this helps,
Signed,
Jorgie.

it's actually teens through young adults up to 24 years of age I believe. I take 3 different kinds of antidepressants, and I have experienced suicidal thoughts while starting certain antidepressants and I'm 21. I don't know why it is that people of certain ages experience suicidal ideation with antidepressants--i think it's just a statistic or percentage that they noticed.

I don't think they only have that effect on kids but I think adults are less impulsive and act less on the thoughts than teens do. I'm pretty sure I read that somewhere.

Because younger people don't have the restraint of an adult. and they are more sensitive anyway, it makes you more melancholy at times and an adult notices this effect and younger people just go with it. I take 2 and I know what to look for in my reactions to these meds.
