The rule of thumb is that for every degree you turn it down and leave it down for 8 hours you save 1% on your heating bills.

If you turn it down 10 degrees every night you will save 10% (but if you step out of your warm bed you will be horribly cold).

You will have to figure out the cost per day for heating your home. Doesn't matter if you use gas or oil. These thermostats allow you to save about 20% . and even lower if pushed a little. Here is how you might want to program the thermostat. It has 4 daily settings you can use. If you wake up at 6"00AM set it to turn on to about 68 at 5:30AM. This will give it time to warm the House and the bath for a shower. If no one will be home for the day you can set it for 7:30 to drop to about 60 for the day. If you get home at 6:00 I would set it to heat up at about 5:30 PM to around 68. This temperature can be maintained because you will probably be up and about until 11:00 PM and then have the thermostat drop back to 62 for the night. You will have to do the math and figure how many hours the furnace did not run to bring the temperature up to 70 for the whole day. If you have kids and the family home you can program it differently and turn it down to 67 or so and wear a sweater. Babies and the elderly have to be considered into the math. Maybe considering shutting doors in other rooms and focus on the main house. With the price of a barrel of oil sitting at about 100 bucks, I think any savings will be change in you pocket

ours has saved about 20% of our heat and cool bill every month - furnace does not run when we aren't home and it goes on when programmed - very good investment!
