To everyone who said "the Crusades" please, read on the origins of the movement. You're getting Pope Urban II's speech mixed up with the actual causes of the mission which was started after the Byzantines were defeated at Manzinkert by the Turks. The then turned to the militaristic west for help.
Also, the 30 years war was a political battle draped in religious trappings. The religious aspect was more or less dragged alongside other matters. It was only convenient that after defeating the Protestant faction that Ferdinand II would try and reintroduce Catholicism to areas it was previously, but that wasn't his reason for for fighting in the first place. The entire war began due a political revolt by a Rhineland noble named Frederick.
The French, Catholic politically and socially at this time, sided with the Swedes, protestants, against the Holy Roman Emperor, who was Catholic. The pope refused to grant Ferdinand support for his war, undermining that notion, since the pope wasn't supporting Ferdinand II's little campaign.
The Spanish were involved in order to try and regain the Netherlands, which had been in open rebellion and de facto independence for a while before 1618.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rarely is a war purely about religion (obviously it is a factor), more often than not religion is merely the cloak used to try and hide baser reasons for conflict. Behind every religious war, or persecution there is usually an economic, social or political cause that is the real reason for the conflict.
There was more to 911 than simply religious motivation, as is the case in Israel, and the holocaust; Hitler went after ethnic Jews, so that meant a few non Jews were included if they had Jewish ancestory.

I don't know that any war is caused by religion. However, charasmatic people have always used religion as a means of convincing the masses to fight. If people are going to be willing to risk their lives, they need a good reason to do it. So the real war may be over oil, real estate, or money; but the people fighting are killing and dying for God and Country.

The Crusades were led against the Moslems and Orthodox Christians. Any war involving Israel were caused by religious differences. European attacks on Latin America attacked pagans and established the RC Church. The Taliban attacked Buddhist temples in Afghanistan. The Pakistan-India conflict is religious. The Balkans have many wars involving Turkish (Moslem) attacks on Orthodox countries. WW2 saw the USTASA attacking the Orthodox Serbs, Roma and Jews ("kill one third, convert one third, and drive out one third). There was retribution/revenge from the Serbs at the end of the war, including the trial of Archbishop Stepinac. Wars against England - Spain and others - were religious in part. Wars against Native Americans were religious in part. Struggle over control of the RC Church - Popes and anti-Popes - was driven by religious control. Cossacks were involved on both ends of religious persecution. Pearl Harbor was a religious attack in part. Romans persecuted Jews and Christians. Babylonians attacked Jews. -NOTE: Religions did not attack. People who professed their faith subverted religious principles to cause Jihads, religious persecutions, and religious imperialism.

Practically all wars are religious... or because of religion. The fight for land went waay back to the biblical times.. in order to control one land over the other.
The want for control SHOWS the opposition in spiritual worlds AND the physical. We know that Heaven and Hell exist because of this. We know that even today how the outcome of way is because of our past experiences throughout history with it.
One of our first wars were because of religion! The want for land back then was something that, if taken over, they could use it for power and "become" like God.
People's desire for power IS war itself.
When someone wants power, they know that a "higher" power exists... When you know the scheme of power, you know that we as humans ALWAYS want that power above us.
God has shown to us many different ways how we can "work together" without the need to spill blood or desire power over others. However, us as humans feel the "opposition" at work and lust for power and control over others.
I have teachings on faith and how the hierarchy of power work...

omg most of them. i dont know if you can say the war in afghanistan because they kinda were asking for it though. i suppose you could if youre not talking about a country. call it the war on terror. theres hitler who thought the jews (a religion) should die. i would say all of them. except the civil war.... im not sure about htat one. the revolutionary war was catholics vs. protestants. the one with ghandi... i pretty sure he acted religously but the UK kinda just wanted land rights.
