You know science has been looking for the missing link for a long time. All they need to do is find the originators or chain letters and they will find that missing link.

originally they where real snail mail letters that people, mainly kids would send to each other, which said something along the lines of:
the Guinness book of records will put us in their book if we send this to 4000 people without breaking the chain. please send this to 5 of your friends to continue the chain. put my name then your name and the person you are sending to on the back of the envelope, the post office is keeping track of how many letters we have sent and if any one has broken the chain. if you don't we wont get into the Guinness book of records

becuase it usually has a "chain" of people who respond.
