In West side story, what does either gang gain by maintaining its turf?

I've seen the movie several times and I still can't figure it out.

Maintaining their turf is maintaining their respect and who they are as a culture. They are maintaining their respect, dignity, heritage... Consider that each gang represents an entire culture of people, not just a small gang in a neighborhood.
