There is so much to see in San Diego, that I would recommend renting a car. It's what I've done the times I've gone there and it's worked out great! Everything is pretty spread out, so renting a car will allow you to maximize the time you're there: Gas Lamp District, Coronado, La Jolla, Carlsbad, the Zoo, the Marina Area, etc etc Good luck!

LOL!!! I can't believe these people are telling you that you need a car! As a tourist, you do NOT need a car. Believe me, I have done the "tourist" things in San Diego as a tourist and I took public transportation.
It was fine. I actually thought it was pretty decent, especially compared to some bigger cities like NY and LA. Most of the "tourist" things to do and see in San Diego are either downtown or accessible by the trolley service (which is very nice, they just got new trolley cars like last year or something) and so you will probably not even have to get on the bus. The bus, by the way, was also good to ride and not crowded at all.
You do NOT need a car to go to Sea World, the beaches, the zoo or anything like that!
I really don't know why those people are telling you that. They probably are just too used to having a car--I don't have one. If you have any questions about the public transportation there, send me a message!

Whether or not you rent a car, check out Old Town Trolley tours at http://www.trolleytours.com . NOTE: this is not the same as the San Diego Trolley. You pay one price for 1 or 2 days, then you get on at one of 8 stops in downtown S.D. for a tour. If you just stay on the tour it takes about 2 hours. But, you can get off at any of the stops and spend as much time there as you like then get back on and continue.
Depending on where you are staying, you might not need a car for those days that you do the Trolley Tour.

Rent a car unless you want to go to Old Town or Downtown San Diego (take the trolley; it's fun).
Otherwise, just use a rental car. Public transportation sucks in S.D.

I agree with the others that renting a car will work far better for you - especially since it's winter time now, and the sunlight is limited each day, narrowing the span of daylight to see things. Public transit will usually take far longer to get from point A to point B. As an example, it takes me about 35 minutes to drive to my job in the Kearny Mesa section of San Diego from my home in north county; if I were to take public transit, the shortest time it would take would be 2 hours and 50 minutes one way. That's for a 23 mile trip.
So you don't want to waste a lot of time taking public transit in order to get around. Today (Sunday 11/25) the sun set at 4:43 pm. See what I mean about not much daylight this time of year?

I live in San Diego. You'll have to rent a car. Everything is really spread out. If you are going to be downtown, you can take the trolley to places like Balboa Park, Seaport Village and Mission Valley. But to get to places on the coast: Sea World, Del Mar and La Jolla, you'll need a car.
