You are lucky to have such an old bible. I have a Dr Chase,(like an encyclopedia) dated around that time, and a small grammar school book, also from the late 1800's. ( can't really remember the exact dates right now,) I have never found any hair, but I did find newspaper clippings from the 1940s. Very interesting! Don't let the hair freak you out. It just adds to the history, and the mystery!

the unknown has a tendancy to 'freak' some out.....look in the bible and you will probably learn who this hair belonged to....those old bibles were the only records of births, marriages and deaths in many families...read through the family tree part...get the most recent name and you can go from there to contact someone from that family and maybe someday you could return their keepsake to one of the decendants.....as you are working on this you won't be bothered by the lock of hair you have found for now it has a purpose.

It really shouldn't freak you out ; it's probably just a child's hair from his/her first haircut or something. I've known some people to do that with the locks of their baby's first hair cut - to place it in side their bible.

I found a lock of hair in my grandfathers book once I thought it was special.

You would really be freaked out then if you saw inside my family Bible. Dead flowers from funerals,Pieces of the kids hair and obits. Really not so strange.

it was probably a christening gift to a child, in some families it was commonplace to put a lock of the childs hair in the bible as a sort of memento for some reason.

i wouldnt let it freak you out, it cant hurt you.

I think you just answered your own question - because you don't know who the hair belonged to.

It would freak me out as well. I'd throw it away or bury it somewhere if I were you.

to me that is very sweet and so sad. peoples lives come and go so fast...i think it's so interesting coming across things from that era and wondering who they belonged to and what their lives were like...
