Ok so I have this friend... we will say his name is Rob. He complained while we were walking through the mall one day, "Man! Why do all the store people follow a black man through the store like he is going to do something bad?"

Later on my friend Rob started stealing some stuff out of a store... does this give good reason to stereotypes or should I just be mad at my friend for encouraging prejudice?

You can converse until the cows come residence. That is not going to give up stereotyping, prejudice, or racism. When humans are harm or while their self-worth is within the trash, they will appear for any one "much less" than they're to make a laugh of. These features are handed down from new release to new release. A white character could no longer have ever troubled you, however your mom has raised you to be leery of whites. You have no idea why, however you've heard her say this in many instances. So prejudice maintains. I desire speaking could give up all of the hate and worry on the earth. Instead it sort of feels to unfold it quicker above all now that we've got web advantage.

For the first part of your question--your friend's comments about black guys getting followed in stores--just answer his question.

You could say, "Some people think that people from certain races have certain negative characteristics, but nobody educated or enlightened believes in racism anymore."

Something like that.

I have found, even here on YA, that I cannot change anyone's racist or prejudiced attitudes.

I don't see how your friend is "encouraging prejudice". Is Rob black? You didn't say, but I would guess from your question that he is.

Don't be mad at him for being being black and by his behavior encouraging prejudice--be mad at him for being a thief. He is responsible for his own behavior and morality, not the behavior and morality of an entire race of people. You are saying that because he is black he shouldn't steal stuff, because if he does people will be prejudiced against black people. Well, sometimes black people steal stuff--they aren't saints any more than white guys are--but Rob cannot change people's perceptions by not stealing stuff anymore. He shouldn't be stealing--not because he is black, but because stealing is wrong.

When people are racist about black people, or anyone else, there is no logic or proof that will change their minds. If you said "in proportion to their numbers, black people are not convicted of crimes any more often than white people" some ignoramus would say "That's only because the courts give them special treatment' or some such nonsense like that.

The thing is, your friend has no responsibility towards fuelling or stamping out other people's prejudices in this day and age. He will belong to many demographics (young, male, black, whatever his social background is etc. ). Yes he stole something, but that's not a black thing. His blackness didn't stop him from paying therefore his statement and his actions are unrelated in my opinion.
If I were him, I would not steal purely so as not to give any racist security guards the satisfaction of catching him.

you should be mad at your friend for being a thief... that's about it. Prejudice means that you think that people who resemble your friend are all thieves... which you don't. But blaming your friend for his people's stereotypes is not correct either. Stereotypes are bigger than that... but as long as you are immune to them you're fine and should keep thinking critically about everything, not just make judgements without consideration. Basically don't judge black people because of your friend; judge each person on this world for his/her own person... then you will be paving your way to actual truth!
-good luck!
